Carer Strategies For Carers Of Loved Ones With A Mental Illness

Are You Caring For A Person With Schizophrenia, Bi-Polar Or Similar Mental Illness?

Do You Want To Feel More In Control Of YOUR Life?

Caring for a person with a mental illness can be a very time consuming, never mind a mentally taxing task. It may be done with all the commitment in the world and all the love you have, but that does not mean to say that caring for a person in this state of mind does not take a personal toll.

My name is Kaye Dennan and I have been a carer for a son with paranoid schizophrenia for over 10 years and would like to offer other carers an insight into the strategies that I, and other fellow carers have used in order to cope with and care for our loved ones.

A little about the journey.

My son showed signs of being unwell at the age of 24, although at the time we did not recognize the signs for what they were.

For approximately 9 months the family struggled through various unwell times until he was finally admitted to hospital for a week long stay. A year and another hospital visit later we were given the diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia.

From there our learning curve started, and what a learning curve it was as you will I am sure, understand. We, and I am sure you do too, experienced things that I would never have dreamed about in other circumstances. Most of them not so pleasant!

After several years I wanted to know more about the illness and its repercussions for my son, but also for our family. In this journey I became a facilitator of a monthly meeting for ARAFMI (Association for Relatives and Friends of the Mentally Ill) in my home town. I continued in this role for 3 years with the help of a local Carers Support Counsellor and during this time I shared so many experiences with other carers of loved ones with mental illnesses of various types.

Caring for the carer has always been a priority for me because I strongly believe that we have to be the best we can be so that we can deal with the issues we are faced with on a daily basis when looking after the welfare of a mentally ill person.

We so often forget about ourselves as we put ourselves in the frontline of different situations and it is with this in mind that the ebook and the various tips in “Carer Coping Strategies” are written.

"Thank you Kaye for the insight into caring for a person with a mental illness. When my son got ill I just did not know how we were going to get through even one day, never mind months and years. I have never in my life felt so out of depth and in such turmoil.”

- Kerry

“Oh, my God, I never realised what I was going to have to face and when I read your mini-course I thought, "No, that won't happen to us!" But you know, so much of it has and I was so glad that I read about it first. Your ebook was so supportive and gave such great ideas for getting through from day to day and having the confidence to make decisions that I knew were right but could not face doing. Thank you!”

- Christine

“Our son has been ill now for 6 years with paranoid schizophrenia and it seems like a lifetime! I found your ebook so helpful because it is a no-nonsense look at the life of a carer. It lays down the facts and takes a grounded view of how a carer should cope with not only their own life, the life of the mentally ill person but also the siblings. My husband has still not been able to accept it and this puts a huge strain on everything. I do hope other carers read this ebook so that they can review how they are going to cope with their own health and hold the family together.”
